In the 62nd Philip C. Jessup International law Moot Court Competition recently concluded, the Tsinghua University team advanced to the Global Round as No. 1 team in the Chinese Division. After fierce competition in the Global Round, the Tsinghua University team became the only team from the Chinese Mainland Division that advanced to the top 32 elimination round, ranking 10th in the world. At the same time, two advocates of this Tsinghua University team won the title of "Top 100 Oralists". Among them, Sun Yizhen, a 2017 undergraduate of THU School of Law, ranks 44th in the world, and Deng Yizhen, a 2017 undergraduate, ranks 49th in the world.
The Philip C. Jessup International law Moot Court Competition, known as "Olympics for Law Students", is the largest and oldest professional moot competition. The moot competition this year was held online, with 574 university teams from 90 countries and regions participating. In the final round, three current judges of the International Court of Justice were invited as judges, namely, Judge Xue Hanqin from China, Judge Peter Tomka from Slovakia and Judge Iwasawa Yuji from Japan.
Introduction of Tsinghua University Team
The current Tsinghua University team was coached by Huang Yuxiang (who graduated from Peking University and worked with the International Court of Justice), and Liu Xinchao, a doctoral student in Tsinghua University, as deputy coach, and led by Sun Yirong from the THU School of Law. The advocates were Sun Yirong and Deng Yijing, and the research assistant team consisted of Wang Jiaqi, Guo Fanjun and Niu Zhiheng, Grade 2018 undergraduate students and Zhou Yuexin and Zhou Shizun, Grade 2017 undergraduate students.
During the month-long competition, the members of the Tsinghua team made extensive and in-depth searches on the legal issues in the cases, held heated discussions on various international law issues encountered in the competitions, constantly improved the quality of their arguments, enriched and improved the court defense materials to cope with emergencies in the competitions, actively exchanged ideas and had friendly exchanges with university teams from other countries and regions on the field, broadened their academic horizons and enhanced their international friendship. The honors won by the team and individual members further reflected the importance attached by THU School of Law to international talent training and legal practice education.
