The First Lecture in the "Series of Lectures on Rule of Law in Foreign-Related Affairs and International Dispute Settlement" Is Successfully Held?

On the afternoon of March 25, 2024, the First Lecture in the “Series of Lectures on Rule of Law in Foreign-Related Affairs and International Dispute Settlement” of the Tsinghua Institute for International Dispute Settlement was successfully held in Room 111 of the Tsinghua Law Library Building. This lecture was delivered by Professor Zhang Yuejiao, the first Chinese judge and former chairwoman on the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the first director of the Tsinghua Institute for International Dispute Settlement. The activity was hosted by Professor Chen Weizuo, current director of the Tsinghua Institute for International Dispute Settlement.


This lecture was held both offline and via online live broadcast, attracting many faculty members, students and alumni of the School of Law, as well as experts, scholars and legal workers from various universities and circles of legal practices, with more than 400 online and offline participants.

In this lecture, Professor Zhang Yuejiao introduced in detail the background, contents and development of China’s foreign-related rule of law construction from the aspects of “rule of law in foreign-related affairs”, “strengthening ‘rule of law in foreign-related affairs’ and safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of our country and citizens”, “urgency and importance of strengthening ‘rule of law in foreign-related affairs’ “ and “urgency and importance of training talents for ‘rule of law in foreign-related affairs’ “, deeply revealed the urgency and importance of training talents for “rule of law in foreign-related affairs”, and offered feasible advice for training such talents in China from comprehensive perspectives.


Next, Zhang Yuejiao put forward practical advice on training talents for “rule of law in foreign-related affairs” from research, teaching and practice, and expressed her ardent expectations for training talents for “rule of law in foreign-related affairs” in China.


During the Q&A session, Professor Zhang Yuejiao patiently answered the questions raised by the participants. She encouraged students to actively participate in moot court or moot arbitration tribunal competitions, work in a specific field conscientiously and deeply, improve their ability to find, study and solve problems, keep the spirit of exploration, broaden their personal horizons, and gradually grow into a high-end talent in foreign-related rule of law through practices.


Finally, Professor Chen Weizuo, as the host, summarized the lecture and thanked Professor Zhang Yuejiao again for her excellent lecture featuring theoretical depth and deeply combined with foreign-related rule of law practice. He noted that Professor Zhang Yuejiao’s profound insights and unique analysis opened a window for the audience to fully understand China’s development in rule of law in foreign-related affairs and talent training.


Experts, scholars, legal workers and students present in the lecture said that they had benefited a lot from the lecture, which lent them a deeper understanding of the urgency and importance of training talents for rule of law in foreign-related affairs.
